Charming The Snake
2 min read
So we are all aware of the art of snake charming. It’s when you hypnotize a snake by singing a note with a pungi. So this pungi must be having some effect on the snake, right? Well after researching about it a little, I got to know about the frequency range of sound of snakes. Which, suprisingly is 80-600 Hertz! Now just to make sure that we are on the same note, the frequency range of the sound we can hear is between 20 Hz to 20KHz. It’s clear that the snake’s ability to hear is way lower than ours. So apparently, the beautiful sound the pungi makes, is usually inaudible to the snakes. So what exactly is hypnotizing the snake? I mean, it is indeed reacting and dancing to it right? Well, the snake charmer has another trick under his sleeve. He taps the ground with his feet softly. Now that may seem softly to us but to the snakes, that’s loud enough. And is that that tap by the charmer’s feet to which the snake reacts and dances. In conclusion, while the pungi may seem like some sort of a magical device, it is only a mere distraction from the real trick.
The reason why I told that was to tell that things aren’t what they usually seem to be. And in these days, the line between a “fact” and a “myth” has been constantly reducing. But honestly, that statement might be a bit vague for most of us are obviously aware of the difference between these two but often forget that there are only a few factors which separate them from one another. First: a fact has readily available proof to support it and two, it is universally agreed upon. But are all facts really “facts”? It’s really interesting to question them. Whenever we add an “always” to a statement, it is crucial to question it. Will the sun “always” rise from the east?
In olden times myths were really common. People believed in magic or often forgot to question what seemed magical. In recent times, most people depend on the internet for answers. But before just blindly trusting them, we must realize how true or uninfluenced are they. It’s necessary to try to dig deep into the topic and give the “why-whirlpool” a go ( I discussed more about it in my recent blog post. ).
